Mitchell: In terms of getting attention for lesser known victims, it has been difficult. Have you found it more difficult to get readers at large - or the media - to pay attention to the cases that had less well-known victims? Tell us about the differences -if there are any - between investigating and writing about the two kinds of cases. Iles: You’ve worked some very high-profile civil rights murder cases, but also other killings of what Southerners call “regular black folks,” people who had no history of activism but who nevertheless were targeted at random. "Race Against Time" chronicles very important work. I hope people isolating at home will check it out. Now, as a fellow author, I want to ask you some questions that might differ from the usual publicity type interviews we get from book critics and reporters. Iles: First, Jerry, let me say congratulations on your great book. You've always been a first-class writer, and "Race Against Time" is an important achievement. You’ve had some bad luck, timing-wise, with the COVID-19 outbreak occurring in the middle of your book’s publication. Novelist Greg Iles ("Cemetery Road" "Natchez Burning") takes a break from his quarantine writing to interview Jerry Mitchell, a former longtime investigative reporter for The Clarion Ledger whose pursuit of unpunished killings is featured in his new book, "Race Against Time: A Reporter Reopens the Unsolved Murder Cases of the Civil Rights Era,” (Simon and Schuster).

Inspired by a true story from the annals of 1970s Italian horror film, and told in dazzlingly precise prose, We Eat Our Own is a resounding literary debut, a thrilling journey behind the scenes of a shocking film and a thoughtful commentary on violence and its repercussions. The actor thought this would be a role that would change his life. Entrepreneurial Americans, international drug traffickers, and M-19 guerillas are all fighting for South America’s future-and the groups aren’t as distinct as you might think. The air is so wet that the celluloid film disintegrates.īut what the actor doesn’t realize is that the greatest threat might be the town itself, and the mysterious shadow economy that powers this remote jungle outpost. The production team seems headed for a breakdown. He’s replacing another actor who quit after seeing the script-a script the director now claims doesn’t exist. When a nameless, struggling actor in 1970s New York gets the call that an enigmatic director wants him for an art film set in the Amazon, he doesn’t hesitate: he flies to South America, no questions asked. An ambitious debut novel by an original young writer, We Eat Our Own blurs the lines between life and art with the story of a film director’s unthinkable experiment in the Amazon. People have been advertising, “move more, eat less” philosophy for a while. You might have seen this in action, when you travel, end up eating a lot, gain some extra pounds, but when you’re back at home, that extra weight is lost quickly. It’s set to some number, but tends to increase over time.Īny short term diet would show some initial weight loss, but over time, the weight comes back to what it was set to. I skipped over most of the parts which showcase why other diets don’t work. Here’re my summary of the book, the parts I remembered. CashApp gives you a free Visa debit card, so you can use it anywhere. To incentivize myself, every hour I fast I give myself $1 (in CashApp), which I can then use to purchase whatever. I like this fasting schedule because it allows me to eat during my work hours, where I feel like munching, drinking chai, etc. Typically, people start their fasts post dinner and skip breakfast. Since reading the book, I’ve been following an 18:6 fasting, where I eat between 9a-3p and fast all other hours, every day. I read The Obesity Code by Dr. Jason Fung. He felt many readers latched on to Harry's rebellion and despair, but overlooked his journey back from that point, which starts when he meets the beautiful young Hermine. However, in the 1960s, Hermann Hesse said that Steppenwolf was "more often and more violently misunderstood" than any of his other books. This might explain Harry's painfully accurate descriptions of depression, which have perhaps been matched since only by William Styron's Darkness Visible. After leaving his wife in the mid-1920s, Hesse lived an isolated life in Basel, reaching suicidal depths of despair. In writing Steppenwolf, Hesse drew on his own spiritual crisis. Harry longs to kill himself, yet clings stubbornly to his "evil days of inward emptiness and despair". Two souls war inside him: "the beast", yearning for savagery and isolation, and "the man" seeking culture, society and love. Having lost his job, family and home, he lives in wolfish isolation, brooding by day and haunting taverns by night. Once a public intellectual, he has retreated in disgust from modern European culture. The novel's protagonist, 47-year-old Harry Haller, is living an extremely death-like existence. In order to complete this novel Hesse immersed himself in the sacred teachings of both Hindu and Buddhist scriptures and lived a semi-reclusive life in order to achieve his own spiritual enlightenment. Here the two go their separate ways, Govinda joining the order of the Buddha, Siddhartha traveling on in order to find his spiritual enlightenment. Siddhartha is joined by his best friend Govinda the two renounce their earthly possessions, engage in ritual fasting and intense meditation and ultimately seek out and speak with Gautam, the famous Buddha. The title of this novel is a combination of two Sanskrit words, "siddha," which is defined as "achieved," and "artha" which is defined as "meaning" or "wealth." The invented word serves as the name for the principal character, a man on a spiritual journey of self-discovery during the time of the Buddha. |
